Two-Step Esterification–Hydrogenation of Bio-Oil to Alcohols and Esters over Raney Ni Catalysts

Fast pyrolysis bio-oil is very difficult to be used because of its acidity, instability, high degree unsaturation, etc. Processes for property upgrading are necessary and required. In this study, three kinds Raney Ni catalysts were prepared investigate two-step esterification–hydrogenation (TEH) upgrade the light fraction bio-oil. The results show that first step in esterification markedly decreased content active compounds such as acids ketones aldehydes increased alcohols esters (from 10.53% 47.55%), which improved stability was favorable following hydrogenation reaction. second TEH (hydrogenation) further quality over metal-modified at 140 °C. particular, Mo-RN catalyst displayed best effect, with only 5.44% acid content, stable component reached 90.16%. This may attributed higher activity from combined MoOx species thermal catalyst. Moreover, obtained upgraded mixture could a solvent raw bio-oil’s esterification. Therefore, it has potential reduce methanol usage energy consumption separation during treatment context. Compared OHE (one-step esterification-hydrogenation) process, THE showed better performance compounds, more saturation complex components by step.
